Almost every year the Commercial Drive Business Society prints about 300 32" x 60" nylon street banners which help create a festive, colourful atmosphere for this unique shopping neighbourhood. Eventually each edition of these unique designs must be retired, so rather than sending them to the landfill they've come up with a very green idea — transform them into reusable nylon shopping bags and umbrellas!
As of December, 2011, converting our old banners into reusable nylon shopping bags and umbrellas rather than using new fabric, we have:
When the most recent edition of bags is sold out, we will have over $14,000 in our green space fund. The latest edition of bags was produced by the Kettle Friendship Society — a neighbourhood non-profit society that provides employment opportunities for people living with mental illness.
"This green initiative even goes one step further", explains Ian McSorley, marketing co-chair for Commercial Drive. "ALL proceeds from the sale of these shopping bags & umbrellas will be donated to the development of new green spaces in the neighbourhood."
Bei Linda Tang, owner of, Dream Designs was very excited about the idea and her business designed and manufactured the first 3 editions of bags. Linda says, "We are pleased to contribute to this fabulous community initiative by designing and manufacturing these shopping bags on a cost recovery basis. Each of them is a unique embodiment of the Commercial Drive history that we are proud to be part of."

"Given all the conversation surrounding paper versus plastic at the store, we thought this was a great approach to creating reusable shopping bags. …A great use of old messaging." shopperculture.com
"Perhaps best of all, though, is that the goodwill from all this goes straight back to the advertisers themselves. A win-win for everyone involved, and one to emulate in commercial districts around the world!" greenweb.federatedmedia.net
"The words “shop local” have been given added meaning thanks to the Commercial Drive Business Society’s initiative to recycle “retired” nylon street banners by turning them in to sturdy shopping bags and selling them in local stores." granvilleonline.ca
"What's interesting about a new effort from Vancouver's Commercial Drive Business Society, however, is that the district's advertisers themselves are the ones doing the recycling." springwise.com
