Keeping the Drive Clean

ktdc1

The Commercial Drive Business Society (CDBS) Street Enhancement Committee works with many local groups to keep the sidewalks and streets in our Business Improvement Area (BIA) clean and safe. In addition to our long partnership with the Kettle Friendship Society, who provide street cleaning, we also work with Rain City Housing and the City of Vancouver, who together, manage the Cold Weather Shelter at 1st and Commercial, and provide Needle Pick Ups in the Commercial Drive BIA.

Our partnerships in this area have grown and now include Vancouver Coastal Health and Mission Possible, who provide regular and ongoing Needle Pick Ups and Micro Cleaning.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

The Commercial Drive Business Society and BIA Partnership advocacy work recently led to an increase to the 2018 City budget for Micro Cleaning in Business Improvement Area’s (BIA).  Our BIA will now receive access to approximately 600 cleaning hours annually (up from 400 hours in 2017) and translates to a $430k Mobile BIA Program City Wide.

In 2017, the BIA Micro Cleaning Pilot resulted in the collection of 3,400 bags of waste, 5,300 needles and 43,000 single-use items from 22 BIA’s.  This is incremental to our traditional micro-cleaning program which collected another 15,000 bags of litter and 90,000 needles from streets and lanes (many of which cross through several BIA’s).

COMMERCIAL DRIVE STREET ENHANCEMENT TEAM

In addition to the above-mentioned partnerships, we also employ a full staff who handle Graffiti Management, Street Enhancement and Pressure Washing on a regular basis.

Here they are gearing up for another day on The Drive!
